Completed Projects
Biodiversity study of the proposed Umeras Peatlands Park at Umeras Bog
FERS Ltd. were commissioned by Umeras Community Development CLG in 2021 to provide a baseline assessment of the biodiversity resource present at the proposed Umeras Peatlands Park at Umeras Bog. Umeras Bog is 300 hectares (741 acres) in area and had been in commercial peat production by Bord na Móna since the mid-1970s.
Soil Organic Carbon and Land Use Mapping (SOLUM)
FERS developed new tier 2 soil carbon stock change factors for reporting land use change emissions and removals in the Irish national green-house gas inventory. A soil carbon database was compiled using previous research and the Teagasc soil information system.
Coillte: Forests for Climate
This project assessed the current Greenhouse Gas (GHG) profile of Coillte’s existing managed forest estate and identified the future GHG mitigation potential under silvicultural management options for the period 2020-2100.
Clonburris SDZ Baseline Ecological Assessment
Baseline ecological assessment of approximately 280 hectare Strategic Development Zone (SDZ) lands at Balgaddy, Clonburris, Co. Dublin.
CARBWARE – Development of the Irish Forest carbon sequestration inventory and reporting system
Single tree growth model, timber forecast and carbon sequestration model.
Irish Land Mapping Observatory (ILMO)
The ILMO project was tasked with developing an integrated Geoinformatics approach towards detecting land cover and use within Irish agricultural lands to facilitate reporting on national greenhouse gas emissions related to land use.
EU LULUCF Regulation – National Forest Management Plan
Projections of forest and harvested wood product greenhouse gas removals/emissions were developed by FERS Ltd using the national forest inventory data and the CBM model.
Hen Harrier Habitat mapping
National project undertaken in 2014 to map habitats according to suitability for Hen Harrier (Circus cyaneus) within all SPAs designated for the species. The methodology for this project has been drafted in conjunction with the National Parks & Wildlife Service as an Irish Wildlife Manual.
BETTERFOR – Forest stand and tree growth modelling (COFORD, DAFM)
Refinement of forest growth model frameworks for Ireland and comparison of stand versus single tree growth models for timber forecasting, planning and carbon sequestration assessment.
Carbon Sequestration by Hedgerows in the Irish Landscape
Pilot study using existing high-density LiDAR in Co. Roscommon to map hedgerow structure and estimate biomass and carbon.
